Common Uses and Features of Blind Pipe Flanges

Description:     Blinds are flanges without a center bore (hole or opening) and are available in both Raised Face (RF) and Flat Face (FF) styles. While most flange types create a connection point that allows the flow of liquid, gas, or air, blind flanges are used to seal the end of a piping system and prevent flow. Blind flanges may be used when testing pipe pressure, to create an access point in a piping system, to temporarily seal a piping system while modifying or repairing the line, or to create a long-term seal to terminate a piping system.     A blind flange is bolted, rather than welded in place. This allows easier access as needed for pipe system upkeep, inspection, or to allow for future expansion. Pairing with a gasket creates a tight seal: The gasket fills the space between the flange faces, which prevents liquid or gas leaks.     How to Choose the Right Blind Flange     Blind pipe flanges may be produced to match bolt hole measurements for slip-on or welding neck flanges, or if needed, can be custom machined to any other specifications. Either way, when purchasing flanges, choose the appropriate flange features, material, dimensions, and class to meet your application needs.           Find the Best Blind Flange Material for the Job     When choosing blind flanges, you must consider the best flange material and dimensions in relation to the piping standards and requirements of your intended application. Generally, your flange material should match the connecting pipe material. The most common blind flange materials are steel and stainless steel.     In many cases, import material is acceptable to save on cost – in these cases, the flanges will still meet all the standards for pressure applications. In instances where domestic flanges are specified, API International manufactures flanges meeting “Buy American” or meeting American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) requirements.     Threaded flanges are joined to pipes by screwing the pipe (which has a male thread, generally NPT per ASME B1.20.1) onto the flange, without seam welds (in certain cases, though, small welds are applied to increase the strength of the connection).     Threaded flanges are available in sizes up to 4 inches and multiple pressure ratings, however, they are used, mostly, small size piping in low pressure and low-temperature applications, like water and air utility services. Threaded flanges are also a mandatory requirement in explosive areas, such as gas stations and plants, as the execution of welded connections in such environments would be dangerous.     A slip-on flange is connected to the pipe or the fittings by two fillet welds, one executed inside and one outside the cavity of the flange. The bore size of a slip-on flange is larger than the outside diameter of the connecting pipe, as the pipe has to slide inside the flange to be connected by the execution of a fillet weld. Slip on flanges are also defined “Hubbed Flanges” and they are easy to recognize due to their slim and compact shape.     Long weld neck flanges (“LWN”) are similar to weld neck flanges, with the exception that the neck (tapered hub) is extended and acts like a boring extension. Long neck flanges are generally used on vessels, columns or barrels. These flange types are available also in the heavy barrel (HB) and equal barrel (E) types.     Socket welding flanges are connected to pipes using a single fillet weld executed on the outer side of the flange (different from the slip-on flange type that requires two welds). According to ASME B31.1, to execute a flanged connection using a socket weld flange, the pipe shall be at first inserted in the socket of the flange until it reaches the bottom of the flange, then it should be lifted by 1.6 mm and finally welded. This gap shall be left to allow proper positioning of the pipe inside the flange socket after the solidification of the weld.         Socket Weld Flanges are used for small-size and high-pressure piping that do not transfer highly corrosive fluids. This due to the fact that these flange types are subject to corrosion in the gap area between the end of the pipe and the shoulder of the socket. Their static strength of socket weld flanges is similar to slip-on flanges’, but their fatigue strength is higher due to the presence of a single, instead of double, fillet weld.     A plate flange is a flat, circular disk that is welded onto the end of a pipe and allows it to be bolted to another pipe. Typically used in fuel and water pipelines, the two flange plates will be bolted together with a gasket in between them. The plate flanges will have bolt holes all around the perimeter and will be used to create junctions, tees and joints.

They are designed to improve processes in metallurgy by refining the final properties of different rare metals. Alloying agents and elements are used as additions to modify or produce alloys in primary metal production melts, foundry melts, and powder metal-blend manufacturing.         Benefits of Master Alloys and Alloying Additives     Master Alloys     A master alloy is a pre-alloyed concentrate or mixture of alloying elements. They are used to add all the major alloying elements in one form to the base metal. For example, a 10% addition of 60% aluminum - 40% vanadium composition master alloy to 90% pure titanium will produce Ti-6Al-4V alloy.     Master alloys are essential for adding small amounts of compounds with large melting point differentials. This is because adding a virgin metal to a melt can be inefficient in terms of energy and metal yield. For example, a small addition of pure copper (1083°C melting point) to a large mass of aluminum (660 °C melting point) would require heating all the aluminum above 1083°C. A 50-50 master alloy of copper and aluminum eliminates unnecessary heating of the aluminum, allowing the correct percentage of this alloy to be added to the bulk of aluminum at a much lower temperature.      Master alloys are also the most effective method of introducing controlled levels of rare earth metals to more complex alloy systems. They help to control oxygen content within the alloy, stabilizing metals that would normally oxidize in the atmosphere.     Copper-based master alloys are produced for the brass and copper industry. The range includes alloys such as Copper-Iron, Copper Manganese, Copper Boron and Copper Zirconium.     The common factor among these alloys is that they dissolve better than the corresponding pure metal or metals. Using KBM Affilips copper-boron 2% master alloy is a great method for improving the quality of copper alloys and brasses. Boron is an effective deoxidiser for copper, without the harmful effect of reducing the electrical conductivity.     The element is also highly effective when compared to other deoxidisers such as phosphorus, lithium or magnesium, therefore less boron is needed per kg of oxygen to achieve the same deoxidation effect.     In copper alloys, boron also slows grain growth during heating. In addition, boron facilitates pouring and filling operations. In brasses, boron behaves as a strong grain refiner. It reacts with several elements present in the melt and the products formed are often insoluble compounds dispersed as fine particles through the melt which act as nucleants.     The mechanical properties are increased with boron and the internal soundness of brass castings is improved.         Applications     Major applications of copper boron alloys include:     Deoxidiser for copper.     Grain refiner for brass.     Most of the ferrochrome produced worldwide is used in manufacturing stainless steel. The chromium content present in stainless steel provides resistance to corrosion as well as gives stainless steel its customary appearance. Around 18% of chrome is used in per unit content of stainless steel. Ferrochrome powder is used in the field of powder metallurgy. Ferrochrome slag is a chemically stable substance. It is used in road construction and civil engineering as well as in the production of refractory materials.     Chromium powder can be used to repair and prevent the four pipes of the boiler, and metallurgically distribute the wear-resistant lining of the chute. Description:     When it comes to selecting the right building material for the project at hand, architects have many options. Natural materials like wood, metal and stone may be right when beauty and durability are key. But manmade materials also have their place, particularly when cost and ability to stand up to demanding environments are critical design considerations. Technology has enabled the production of fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP) to provide the characteristics needed to simulate - and often surpass - many of the performance characteristics of traditional materials. Just as durable, frequently stronger and typically more cost effective, lighter, easier to clean and install, FRP machine has solutions for industrial and commercial challenges, particularly those with corrosive environments. This article will serve as a primer on FRP ceiling and wall panels, discussing their properties, how they are made, and their appropriate applications.     FRP     While many plastics are pure plastics, there are also plastic composites. Plastics can be reinforced when additional strength is needed, usually with reinforcing fibers. The combination of plastic and reinforcement produces some of the strongest materials for their weight ever made. An FRP composite is actually a combination of a polymer matrix and a reinforcing agent such as glass, carbon, or aramid (a class of heat-resistant and strong synthetic fibers), so that there is a length to thickness ratio that provides a reinforcing function.     The resin protects the fibers, maintains their alignment, and distributes the loads evenly among them. The FRP sheets panels may also contain fillers, additives and core materials. None of the elements in a composite dissolve or merge completely into each other, but act together to offer benefits ideal for structural applications. The FRP significantly increases the members' load carrying capacity. According to the American Composites Manufacturing Association, FRP composites deliver more strength per unit of weight than most metals and are 1/5th the weight of steel.     Many FRP wall and ceiling panels are made of thermoset plastic, that is, a material that undergoes a chemical reaction in which it is formed into a solid and cannot be reformed. By reinforcing the plastic matrix, a wide variety of physical strengths and properties can be designed into the FRP composite. Additionally, the type and configuration of the reinforcement can be selected, along with the type of plastic and additives within the matrix. FRP composites can be developed specifically for the performance required versus traditional materials such as wood, metal, ceramics, and the like. A key advantage of FRP is that engineers can design the FRP composite to provide the needed characteristics, and avoid cost penalties of an over-engineered product.     A thermoset FRP wall panel provides a long-term, durable, sanitary finish that meets the rugged performance needed in food processing, health care and storage environments. The primary advantage of the FRP decorative plastic panels is their long-term resolution of these performance needs.     On the other hand, non-reinforced thermoplastic panels such as those made of PVC, PE or PP, or combinations thereof, may be lower in cost but have inferior performance characteristics. Because of their lack of reinforcement, they are particularly difficult to install properly. Both PE- and PP-based panels may be more difficult to use with water-based latex adhesives because of high-surface tension properties. That is, during installation, latex adhesives can tend to "bead" and resist spreading, possibly causing delamination early after installation. The high surface tension, combined with thermal expansion up to three times higher than that of FRP panels, can cause bubbles and bulges in wall panels within weeks of installation. Further, only a small temperature change will result in a relatively large expansion of the non reinforced thermoplastic panels-a property that will cause failure and need for replacement in refrigerated and cooking areas.     The soft surface of the thermoplastics makes them poor performers in cleanability and abrasion. Surface hardness tests show that FRP colored plastic roofing sheets are over three times harder than non-reinforced thermoplastics which tend to stain easily and become difficult to clean. This applies to graffiti, food stains and yellowing and color change. In terms of durability, the thermoplastic panels display only 24 percent of the stiffness provided in FRP panels. While often touted as environmentally friendly, non-reinforced thermoplastics contain a small percentage of recycled plastic. The higher the recycled plastic component, the lower the performance characteristics, and use of recycled content contributes to premature aging and yellowing.     In selecting thermoset FRP panels, which have no recycled plastic at this point, architects should note that they do vary in strength based on the amount of fiberglass reinforcement. Less expensive panels tend to have less reinforcement. The panels are generally utilitarian, rather than aesthetic, and have a tendency to yellow with age, though this can be somewhat offset by use of a special sealant. An installation crew experienced with FRP clear roofing sheets is advisable.

Plastic pallets vs. Wood pallets: Which is Better?

Description:     Pallets     Pallets, be they plastic or wood, are probably the most common item you can find in a warehouse or any factory. A pallet is a flat transport structure that supports goods in a stable manner while being lifted by a machine. It can be lifted by material handling tools: forklift, pallet jack, front loader, work saver, jacking device, cranes etc. It forms the structural base of a unit load which allows handling and storage efficiencies.     Pallets are often placed below goods and containers and are secured with strapping, stretch wrap or shrink wrap and shipped. The modern usage of pallets has superseded older forms of crating like the wooden box and the wooden barrel since its invention in the twentieth century. The widespread use of pallets can be explained by one very practical reason — it works well with modern packaging such as corrugated boxes and intermodal containers commonly used for bulk shipping.     Wood and plastic pallets are common and widespread. Metal pallets, paper pallets and pallets made from recycled materials are less common and have very specific use cases. Each material has advantages and disadvantages.     Plastic Pallet vs. Wood Pallet     Let’s us try to understand why some companies prefer the use of wooden pallets while others prefer the plastic.     Wood Pallets     Many people consider low-cost pallets, which often use softwood, disposable. Logistics companies usually throw them away as trash together with other wrapping parts, at the end of the shipment. These disposable pallets are often simple stringer pallets, and raisable from two sides.     Hardwood block pallets are slightly more complex and costlier to make. As such, the recipient usually sends the pallet back to the sender or pays a deposit is prior to shipment. Otherwise, the pallets are sold after shipment. Hardwood block pallets are able to withstand a heavier load compared to it’s softwood counterpart.     However, wood pallets can pose terrible biological problems as they are vulnerable to chemical and biological contamination, such as growth of bacteria in food and produce transportation, and even pest infestation. Food and produce industries tend to avoid using wooden pallets and instead opt for plastic pallets which they consider a more hygienic alternative.     Wooden pallets are vulnerable to biological risks like bacterial contamination and insect infestation. They can be mitigated by using ISPM 15 certified wooden pallets which have been debarked and then heat treated or fumigated with methyl bromide and then branded with a mark of compliance.     Plastic Pallets     The most viable substitute to the wood pallet is a plastic pallet. They are very durable and light, and about the same price as a wood pallet. In addition, plastic pallet does not require fumigation for export, is half the weight of wood and it satisfies good storage practice for food and pharmaceutical customers.     They are light, tough and extremely durable — lasting for a hundred trips or more. Plastic spill pallets are also resistant to chemicals, corrosion, weathering and rot. They are pest free and able to handle wet environment well.     The dynamic load capacity ranges from 500 kg to 1.5 tons, depending on the design and raw materials used.           Durability & Service Lifespan     Plastic is long lasting and sturdy. This is especially important in the usage of plastic pallets as these must support lots of items of various weights many times.      Plastic pallets are difficult to repair, and can be ten times as pricey as hardwood, hence they are often used by logistics companies who can gain from their toughness and stack-ability. Many large supply chains have ramped up the use of plastic pallets due to the need to reduce costs through waste, transport and health & safety.           Safety, Hygiene & Ease of Transport     Due to the unique physical and chemical characteristics of the plastic pallet it is an ideal choice for airfreight.      Some plastic pallet boxes can collapse from plastic deformation (creep) if used to store heavy loads for long periods. There is no risk of injuries to workers as plastic pallets are light and have no protruding nails or splinters like wood pallets.     Foldable plastic pallet box usually has anti-slip rubber grommets to make the unit load stable and to guard against load shifting by providing a non-skid surface.
